After many years of learning about and living with Crohn’s disease, there is one thing that still surprises me. That is how every individual can be affected so differently. Everyone reacts, flares, and experiences different side affects. What might work to reduce the symptoms for one, will probably not work for another.

For me, stress is a trigger. It is the one thing that my body cannot deal with, but stress masks itself in many different forms – it gets very complex and this has taught me the importance of taking each day at a time.

Important note: assess how you feel every morning, if you need to ease of and get an hour to relax, put aside that time. It is crucial.

Getting a break, getting away from the worries of everyday life is one of the best ways to reduce stress overall. Moving away from your normal routine, feeling the sun on your skin and focusing on something positive for a few days, is something I try to do at least once a year.

Last September, in the middle of a very busy business year I took a trip to Santorini in Greece. This is a bucket list destination, my dream holiday and it turned out to be everything I had hoped for on the run up to the trip. Alongside my fiancé, we took 4 days out, away from our work schedules and to simply spend some time together. This wasn’t a ‘lazy’ holiday, this was our chance to explore the island, to admire the breathtaking views, to walk more, and of course to do some shopping.

Just being on holiday, with the warmth of the sun was enough but truthfully, Santorini inspired me from the moment I stepped off the plane. The island is beautiful from every angle, in the hustle and bustle of the tourists it still feels magical, and very intimate. This break was our chance to spend real quality time together.

I got the most enjoyment from the feeling of a weight lifting itself off my shoulders, instantly relaxed, I was able to breathe and enjoy the moment. Every moment of every day on the island.

My favourite memories, from Santorini are:

#1 – walking hand in hand through the cobbled streets of Thira.

#2 – drinking cocktails in quiet bars, with the best views.

#3 – relaxing by our private pool.

#4 – exploring Oia.

#5 – witnessing the most magical sunsets in the world.
